There's something about the first week of January that makes everyone want to clear the decks. The holidays are over, the decorations are packed away and a brand-new year is sitting there, full of possibility. It's the perfect time to give your home office a proper reset.
This isn't about a total makeover or buying a whole new setup. It's a simple, seven-step New Year home office reset that clears out last year's clutter and leaves you with a calm, organized workspace that's ready for 2027. Block out an afternoon, put on some music and let's begin.
Step 1: Empty everything
Take everything off your desk. Yes, everything: monitor accessories, pens, sticky notes, mugs, chargers, papers and that random screw you've been meaning to deal with since March. Empty the drawers too, if you can. Seeing your desk completely bare is a great reminder of how much space you actually have.
Wipe every surface down, including the keyboard, mouse, monitor and desk lamp. A clean surface instantly feels like a fresh start.
Step 2: Sort into keep, relocate and let go
Go through the pile and sort each item into one of three groups:
- Keep: things you use at your desk at least weekly.
- Relocate: useful items that belong somewhere else in the house.
- Let go: dried-out pens, old receipts, outdated papers, tangled freebies and anything broken.
Be honest. If you haven't used it in the last year, it probably doesn't need prime desk real estate in the next one.
Step 3: Give every small thing a home
Clutter usually comes from small items without a designated spot. A good desk organizer gives pens, scissors, sticky notes and clips a place to live, so they don't spread across the desk. Choose one that matches your style so it feels like décor rather than storage.
Step 4: Tame the cords once and for all
Nothing makes a workspace feel chaotic faster than a tangle of cables. Since your desk is empty, this is the easiest moment of the year to fix it. Unplug everything, label the plugs with a little washi tape, then route cables along the back of the desk and secure them with ties or adhesive clips. Hide the power strip in a cable box so the floor under your desk looks calm.

Step 5: Set up a planning station
A fresh year deserves a fresh planner, and keeping it on your desk (not in a drawer) is what makes you actually use it. Create a small planning station: your planner, one or two favorite pens and a few sticky notes, all within arm's reach. Open it every morning with your coffee and every Friday for a quick weekly review.
The Forvencer 2027 planner is a large 8.5 x 11 inch hardcover with weekly and monthly pages for January through December 2027, plus monthly tabs and an inner pocket for loose papers.
Step 6: Put back only what earns its place
Now return your "keep" items to the desk, but slowly. Start with the essentials: computer, keyboard, mouse, lamp and planner. Then add personal touches one at a time and stop when it feels calm rather than full. A good rule is to leave at least a third of your desk surface completely clear, so you have room to think, write and spread out.
Style what's left with intention. Group a few objects of different heights together, like a plant, a candle and a small stack of books, instead of scattering them around.
Step 7: Create a weekly reset habit
The real secret to an organized workspace isn't one big clean in January. It's a tiny habit that keeps it that way. At the end of each workday, take a few minutes to clear your desk, put things back in their homes and jot down tomorrow's top three tasks. On Fridays, empty your inbox tray and recycle any papers you no longer need.

Bonus: refresh the feel of the room
Once the practical work is done, give the room a little January glow-up:
- Swap holiday décor for something fresh and calm, like eucalyptus or a simple green plant.
- Add a new candle scent that feels clean and bright.
- Wash the throw blanket and fluff the chair cushion.
- Open the windows for a few minutes to let in fresh air.
Your 2027 workspace starts now
A New Year home office reset takes an afternoon, but the calm lasts for months. You'll find things faster, feel less distracted and actually look forward to sitting down at your desk on that first Monday of January. Save this list, pick a date on your calendar and give yourself the gift of a fresh start.
