Goal setting doesn't have to mean a frantic December 31st list you've forgotten by February. Some of the best plans come from slowing down: a quiet weekend, a warm drink, a blanket and a notebook. That's the idea behind this guide. Instead of a long list of resolutions, you'll spend one cozy weekend reflecting on this year and building a gentle, realistic plan for 2027.

You can do this anytime between now and January. Many people like to do it over the slower days between Christmas and New Year, but planning in November or early December gives you a head start before the holiday rush.

Before you start: set the scene

Treat your planning weekend like a small retreat. Clear a spot at your desk or curl up on the couch. Make a pot of tea or coffee, light a candle (or a flameless one if you'll be moving around), and put your phone on do not disturb. Gather a few supplies:

  • A notebook or journal for messy thinking
  • A 2027 planner for the final plan
  • A couple of pens you love writing with
  • Sticky notes in two or three colors

Saturday morning: reflect on 2026

You can't plan where you're going without looking at where you've been. Spend an hour or so with these questions. Write freely and don't edit yourself.

  • What am I most proud of this year?
  • What were the best moments, big or small?
  • What drained my energy?
  • What did I start but not finish, and do I still care about it?
  • What did I learn about how I like to work?

Flip back through your calendar, photos and old to-do lists to jog your memory. You'll be surprised how much you did.

Saturday afternoon: choose a word for the year

A word of the year is a simple, gentle alternative to strict resolutions. It's a theme that helps you make decisions. Words like steady, simplify, grow, rest, create or brave can guide everything from how you plan your week to what you say yes to. Write a few options on sticky notes, sleep on it and pick your favorite in the morning.

Sunday morning: pick three to five goals

Now look at your reflections and your word, and choose three to five goals for 2027. Fewer is better. It helps to think in life areas so your plan feels balanced:

  • Work or business: a project, income target, skill or side gig.
  • Home: a room to finish, a routine to build or a space to declutter.
  • Health: movement, sleep, food or rest.
  • Relationships: people you want to see more often.
  • Joy: hobbies, travel or something just for fun.

Make each goal specific enough that you'll know when you've achieved it. "Read more" becomes "read one book a month." "Get organized" becomes "do a 10-minute desk reset every Friday."

Sunday afternoon: break goals into quarters and months

Big goals feel manageable once they're split into smaller pieces. For each goal, ask: what would need to happen by the end of March, June, September and December? Then choose a first step for January.

This is where a good planner shines. Use the monthly pages to map out milestones and the weekly pages to schedule the actual steps. The Forvencer 2027 planner has both weekly and monthly layouts for the full year, monthly tabs to jump around quickly, and a roomy 8.5 x 11 inch size that leaves plenty of space for notes.

Build a simple weekly planning ritual

The plan only works if you look at it. Choose a time each week, like Sunday evening or Monday morning, for a 15-minute check-in:

  1. Look back at last week. What went well?
  2. Look at your goals and this month's milestones.
  3. Choose your top three priorities for the week.
  4. Block time for them in your planner.

Pair the ritual with something you enjoy, like your favorite mug of tea or a candle you only light for planning, and it will start to feel like a treat instead of a chore.

Keep it gentle

Plans change, and that's okay. If February gets busy or a goal stops feeling right, adjust it. The point of planning isn't perfection. It's having a clear, kind direction for the year and a cozy ritual to come back to whenever you feel lost.
